The End of an Era: DICE Is No Longer Swedish
It is now official: EA and DICE have been acquired by the Saudi state through a company led by Trump’s son-in-law. The $55 billion acquisition of Electronic Arts has now been completed.
I have to admit, I find this incredibly disappointing.
Battlefield is no longer a Swedish success story—except as part of its history. That’s genuinely sad, and unfortunately, I don’t think this will be the last acquisition of its kind.
I know this may sound old-fashioned or overly sentimental, but my reaction is that I no longer see Battlefield as a franchise I’m interested in supporting. In the past, we’ve seen criticism from parts of the LGBTQ+ community over EA’s ownership of The Sims. Now those games are also ultimately under Saudi ownership.
To me, this feels like nothing less than gamewashing, in much the same way that sportswashing has become a widely discussed issue. And now, our beloved Battlefield is no longer Swedish.
