MSI continues its push into the handheld gaming PC market with the Claw 8 EX AI+. The new model combines a larger 8-inch display with Intel’s latest graphics and AI technologies, while MSI is promising increased performance and extended battery life.

The Claw 8 EX AI+ features an 8-inch 16:10 display with a 120Hz refresh rate. According to MSI, the larger screen is designed to provide a more immersive gaming experience without making the device unnecessarily difficult to carry.

Under the hood, the handheld is powered by Intel Arc G3 Extreme graphics and supports Intel XeSS 3, including Multi-Frame Generation. MSI claims that this technology can deliver up to three times higher FPS compared with competing handheld gaming devices. XeSS 3 is also supported in more than 90 games, according to MSI.

The device is equipped with an 80Wh battery, which MSI says can provide more than four hours of high-performance gaming. The Claw 8 EX AI+ also features Hall Effect technology for both its triggers and analogue sticks, while the internal 2280-format SSD can be replaced for easier storage upgrades.

MSI has also redesigned the controls, taking inspiration from the ergonomics of Xbox controllers. The company says the new design is intended to provide a more natural and comfortable grip during longer gaming sessions. The handheld is also available in the striking Void Purple colour.

MSI’s claims – but real-world testing will tell the story

It is important to point out that the performance figures and battery-life claims mentioned above come directly from MSI. On paper, both the claimed performance and battery capacity look interesting, but as always with manufacturer specifications and performance claims, they need to be verified under real-world conditions.

Until we have had the opportunity to test the Claw 8 EX AI+ ourselves, we simply cannot say how well MSI’s claims hold up in practice. Actual FPS and battery life can vary significantly depending on the game, resolution, graphics settings and which technologies are being used.

We will therefore reserve our final judgement until we have had the chance to put the Claw 8 EX AI+ through our own testing.
