After more than 23 years in esports, Complexity is closing its doors.

Jason Lake, the founder and longtime leader of Complexity, has announced his departure from the organization and confirmed that Complexity has ceased operations.

In a video posted on X, Lake explained the reasons behind the decision and reflected on his more than two decades with the organization.

According to Lake, the decision came after evaluating the organization’s financial situation and the increasingly difficult environment for securing the investment needed to continue operating at the same level.

Rather than allowing Complexity to slowly decline, Lake and his team decided that it was better to end operations in an organized way while the organization was still able to leave on its own terms.

The changing esports landscape

Complexity’s shutdown comes during a period of significant change across the esports industry.

Over the past few years, esports organizations have faced increasing pressure around profitability, sponsorships, investment and the cost of competing at the highest level.

Complexity was no exception.

The organization had already begun scaling back its operations, including its departure from Counter-Strike in 2025. Maintaining a top-level esports operation requires significant financial resources, and the changing investment landscape made it increasingly difficult to sustain the business.

For Lake, the decision was ultimately about avoiding a slow decline and instead closing the organization in a controlled and professional manner.

The end of an era

For Jason Lake, the announcement marks the end of a 23-year journey with Complexity.

Since founding the organization, Lake has played a major role in building Complexity into one of North America’s longest-running esports organizations.

Over the years, Complexity competed across multiple titles and became particularly well known for its presence in Counter-Strike. The organization competed at numerous Major tournaments and established itself as a recognizable name in the global esports scene.

Lake acknowledged that leaving Complexity after 23 years is a strange feeling, having spent such a significant part of his life building the organization.

However, this does not appear to be the end of his involvement in esports.

What happens to the Complexity brand?

While Complexity’s operations have ended, the Complexity brand itself may not disappear completely.

The organization’s intellectual property and other assets have returned to GameSquare, meaning there is still a possibility that the Complexity name could have a future in some form.

Lake and his former team, however, are no longer involved in the operation of the organization.

Lake has also made it clear that he is not retiring from esports.

After taking some time away, he says he is looking toward the future and remains interested in building something new within the industry.

For now, though, one of esports’ longest-running organizations has reached the end of its current chapter.

After 23 years, Complexity is no longer competing.

And for Jason Lake, the man who built it, a new chapter is about to begin.
