Korean Telecom (KT), South Korea’s second-largest mobile provider, is being investigated for allegedly donating political funds illegally to numerous lawmakers on the country’s broadcasting and communications committee. Notably, the company is accused of improperly paying hundreds of millions of won to KeSPA, in order to win favor with former chairman Jun Byung-hun, The Korea Times reports.
KT sponsors the esports organization KT Rolster, which currently competes in the League of Legends Champions Korea competition. Having also sponsored numerous events organized by KeSPA, prosecutors believe there were possible monetary and material exchanges between the two entities, ultimately benefiting both.
In his capacity as former presidential secretary, Jun allegedly asked for 2 billion won ($1.8 million) to be allocated to the association. Seoul police investigators are currently reviewing KT’s financial records and the phone records of those in the company’s corporate relations department, which were submitted voluntarily.
